So what do you eat…?
This question always makes me laugh. Like, if you don’t eat meat and dairy the only thing left to eat is lettuce!
In reality a well-planned plant based diet is probably more varied than a traditional western one based around meat and dairy. Many cultures traditionally have a plant based or mostly plant based diet. It appears to me that as time goes on, and the western (globalisation) culture spreads, we are all collectively eating a less varied diet. One of the great advantages to living in Australia is the broad variety of produce available to us. Our multiculturalism means we are spoilt for choice.
My plant based diet has me feasting on:
- Luscious leaves
- Sweet and seductive root veg
- Protein and fibre packed beans and pulses
- Whole, chopped and ground nuts and seeds
- Grilled peppers, zucchinis, eggplant and squashes
- All varieties of mushrooms
- Corn in many forms
- Grains of all shapes, sizes and colours
- Herbs by the handful and spices abound
- All fruits including the very versatile juice of lemons and limes
- Creamy avocados
- Bulbs of fennel, onion and garlic
- … to name just a few
All of these combine to make a smorgasbord of dishes like:
- Mexican beans
- Stir Fry
- Herbed roast veggies
- Steamed veggies with any amount of sauces and sides
- Soup in limitless veggie incarnations
- Fritters, burgers and patties
- One pot, slow cooked, wonders
- Baked dishes like lasagne and parmigiana
- Stuffed jacket potatoes / sweet potatoes
- Plus so much more…
As you can see there are so many options. What I “can eat” is only limited by my imagination.
Variety really is the spice of life. When you eat the greatest variety of foods you get the greatest health benefits. Eating a rainbow of foods makes sure you get all the different nutrients available to us from nature. I am sure it is no coincidence that we get sick of eating the same meals over and over again. We are programmed to crave variety.
Eating what is in season is another way to get a great variety of foods and their corresponding nutrients in your belly. Not only does eating seasonally maintain variety but insures that you are getting foods at their freshest with the maximum amount of nutrition.
I like to use the produce I find influence what I am going to cook/prepare. Start with one or two central ingredients, that stand out, and work with accompanying flavours to build a dish or an entire menu.
So don’t worry… I can find plenty to eat, thank you. I hope that I have inspired you to add some more plants to your plate.
